55 knot Squall, Vinišće, Croatia
After spending the night anchored in Vinišće we get up to a wind shift, start to raise the anchor to reset as the anchor did not not reset well with the 180 degree change. Half way through raising this squall hit at 50-60 knots with heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Perfect maneuver. Fortunately the wind was blowing offshore and you had it from the back, but: Luck is with the hardworking ones!
If you are close to other boats, would make a X lines with their bowcleat to midship cleat and vv? Or bow to bow, mid to mid?
Could you a dinghy lige this as an extra wide fender? ;-)
Hey Nick, are you interested in co Skipper / Training for a week 21.07 - 28.07. departure in Zadar and let you off in trogir on a 50ft Bavaria c50? Can we get in contact anyways if interested?
Any tips how to furl the main sail into mast, in such a way to be sure it never gets stuck? Keep it tensioned? Furl it in while under sail?
What about your anchor ?
What do you mean? We were moored with lazy lines/mooring lines off the bow.
This docking is good because the speed of the boat is sufficient. The fault of beginners is to slow down in strong winds for fear of an accident, which reduces the maneuverability of the boat. Bernoulli's laws explain to us that the forces applied in the air vary according to the square of the wind speed and underwater according to the square of the boat speed. A boat moving at low speed is driven by the wind.
Great video and explanation, very helpful thanks! I've just a couple of questions: first, is the helm neutral or is it to starboard when you increase engine speed, not clear in the video? Second, is there any different approach to adopt if the propeller is right-handed or left-handed? Thanks, Andrea
Hey Andrea. The helm position is neutral, this is a twin rudder yacht so it makes very little difference where you set the helm when the boat is stationary. No different approach based on propeller. You will have a change in effect between the two, and the process is still the same :)
Ma se è sempre nello stesso punto. È un montaggio
This is really helpful and clear, one thing I did notice is that you stepped inside your line. Never step inside a line but walk around so it can't make you trip or even worse pull you overboard.
This is tipical example how fast storm in Croatia comes and go…
Enough speed to generate force to manoeuvre against the wind pressure. Clear orders, good spirit, well prepared plan, fenders and ropes. Helpful support from the marina. Once you are between the neighbour boats, the wind force drops significantly. Next Level: Very small or overcrowded harbour, no support, small crew. But the approach should also work this way. Good example!
Very good instruction from all of this series of videos. I would just be a bit concerned about letting the lazy lines go from the bow with the engine in gear. Maybe the lines are set up differently in Croatia than in Greece but I have seen quite a few lazy lines (dock end) get chewed around a prop (not mine, fortunately... yet).
Yes this is always something to be aware of and cautious of. Some a long and suitable to do so. Others have been caught before and are short now! It should be in first checks to see what the situation is with these lines. A good plan here is to pull them up from the shore and out to the side then releasing them so they are clear of the prop/stern
Nice one, what about all that but padel stays from other side of fence, more place on boat.
Yes perfectly do able. Harder to set up. And because we dock a lot in the piers, the board can stay there when we dock. If on the outside it would get damaged and interfere with the docking manoeuvre.
Thanks for linking to this video, again this is a great presentation -perhaps add the full mooring sequence one day? I hadn’t seen it before. Last weekend at the end of a charter in Corfu, my wife and I were faced with highly unusual conditions for Corfu. Twenty knots straight down the pontoon with (as in your video) all the wind coming across from starboard side. As it happens, I did almost this exact manoeuvre with some slight differences…. Once I had the stbd quarter line on, I engaged full power and full stbd helm which just about kept us in equilibrium. I then, tightened off the helm nut while my wife hooked the only lazy lane available (also starboard side) and I held the loose end of the line inside the boat whilst she tied off the business end forward. I was shaking at the end of it all because it was such an unusual (for Corfu) wind phenomena. I had learned the technique of using a control line years earlier when I owned a small power boat and its mooring was in crosswind by default but I never imagined that this technique would also work with a sailing bot in much more extreme conditions. Nice one Nick. Love your vids. I must come to Croatia one day lol
I’m totally amazed by this. On the same day we were routing Kornati to Milna in what appeared to be entirely calm conditions. Scary that this stuff can come out of nowhere! And as you said somewhere else, these seem to be more and more unpredictable. Great footage though!!
No safety jackets?
😂
Wouldn't it be better to make the bowline loop much longer so the knot reached over the bow so it could be tied directly onto a cleat rather than faffing about with an additional line.
For sure make the bowline longer, as David discovered once he got to the bow to retrieve it. The second line that depends which you are referring to: The first step to throw a stern line captive over the bouy? Or the second line on the bow? I will always secure the yacht at the bow with two separate lines. And usually, one of them will actually be secured to the loop/shackle underneath the bouy itself, not the top ring, as this is the mooring point and strength. This way if the rod inside the bout is rusted or damaged and gives way, we are safe on the second line.
Oh. When you said 'singlehanded' - you assumed someone would be on the dock. Now show how it's done without anyone's help
Sure thing right away 🤣 ua-cam.com/video/V-cKA-s2lIA/v-deo.html
no help because not windy - in wind you could have had your stern line blown overboard and then catch in the prop causing lots of damage. also way too slow if windy - your bow would have slammed into the leeward boat. show us again in the wind next time.
The whole point of this video is to take advantage of the no wind situation to slow down this whole process and demonstrate it for those who are not familiar with this kind of docking. If you don’t find it helpful, I am ok with that. You are more than welcome to unsubscribe 🥳
You are correct that using one long line doubled up is easier ua-cam.com/users/shortsHjAryzwYk9s?si=13_Ib4U45YJ93GkT
Give the cat a large 140% J0/FRO style poliester Genoa, the clew of which reaches all the way back to the cockpit and it would sail just as well as a monohull. I'm not a catamaran person and I also prefer a monohull, but this is simply not an objective performance comparison. It would be if you rolled out the self tacking (J2) jib. But even then it's not really fair because you have Quantum's poliester sails compared to his dacron ones. That lagoon is a 2018/2019 so the sails are much older and more deformed than your 2022 ones.
Best sailing vessel review I've ever seen. Honest, concise, and great production quality. Please do more (different) boats!
This is just about the best video presentation that I have seen about stern to mooring with lazy lines. Irrespective that you have done this single-handed, every action was explained in order, and in detail. Really good. One thing I would say is that you mentioned that you would drive against the attached stern line in windy conditions and I agree with this, but when doing this, you do have to be a bit careful with the 'loose' end of the lazy line dropping back under the stern. If it is long enough, i tend to drop it over the inside of the safety lines and onto the boat or get a crew member to hold it high. You may have done it already and I haven't seen it, but mooring stern to with lazy lines in a crosswind would also be a very valuable video presentation. I had such a set of conditions last weekend in abnormal weather in Corfu.
Thank you for the comment and feedback. It is much appreciated as you can imagine we have a lot of comments on the other side of constructive! Yes this loose end or ‘lazy’ end often made from lighter thinner line that attaches to the pier is a huge consideration when doing this manoeuvre. The best of the dock hands will hold the end clear as it is taken to the bow to ensure it staying away from the prop. I have a few videos of crosswind control lines, maybe some docking ones though I have not had the .. ‘opportunity with the right weather and time in the moment’ lol to film this. Also once it hits a certain level getting the drone up is also risky. I will see what I can find for you and post in another comment

Heard these boats falling in pieces, leakings, ikea quality of the interiors, but overall I dont dislike, did you sail eventually one of them?
Yes the footage it all from the week I spent sailing the yacht. Did not bother sailing the new one. Not enough changed to get me on one
Pour les gens qui disent en Méditerranée c’est cool comme un lac. 😂
Sorry if I already answered what kind of anchor were you using?
Using a standard delta. Anchor was it’s not resetting on the wind shift as I would have liked and given our position at the time we were just lifting to re drop.
Finally a review that is honest and correct! Stick with your honesty mate, you already have a follower for life. Much love from Toronto.
Wohh cool recording of strong wind man. the water looked weird like white lines in the water at 2:18
Irresponsible.... Risking to go overboard without a lifevest or rope attached just to grab some cushions.... Bad judgement.
🤣 you really don’t know me! I made some bad judgement calls before, this is certainly not one of them!

Hi Nick, Nice Vid, I especially appreciated the tip about the ratchet system for controlling reefing the sail as I only normally use this if the endless furling line slips off the mast windlass and I have to wind it in manually. I noticed you furled and unfurl the sail on a port tack which I think puts unnecessary tension on the furling process as the sail rubs up against the entry slot. It is much easier to head upwind wind and bear off to port no more than a couple of degrees. With the sail now on port side the sail will furl away with no resistance on the slot and without over tensioning the wrap onto the foil. keep up the good work!
Completely agree! I had the opportunity to film the vid and needed to head away from reefs and rocks so a port rack was how it went. Though I will always give it more like 15deg in order to reduce unnecessary flapping of the sail when head to wind. Thanks for the feedback!

Any forecasts or weather warnings?
I’ll look at doing an update over the next 24hours.
Really nice video, well done! Personally I prefer floating lines on slip to the shore, because they do not tend to catch the propellor. Specially in emergency situations, when the anchor drags, none-floating shore lines are loose and therefore under water. Floating lines are easier to handle. You can start the engine and go in forward gear without risk to loose the engine in emergency situations. For shore lines I recommend to use slip lines. When you stay overnight and a thunderstorm is approaching you have to leave very fast. Because in a thunderstorm gusts come from all directions and the anchor-shore line combination is not secure anymore. Under such conditions, in the middle of the night, nobody wants to swim to a rocky shore to remove the lines, even with a dinghy it takes to long.
Vinisce is quite closed and protected bay but the winds can still get very strong. The storms in Croatia are always announced on the weather forecast on WHF. Always keep an eye on the forecast when sailing in Croatia as we get some really strong summer storms sometimes. Most of the time you can hide in some protected bay and avoid it.
Hi. I always love your videos. I’m in New Caledonia 😮
I'd love to hear if i can put a flex solar panel in the dinghy and recharge while I'm ashore eating octopus peka paired with a nice grk, and my girl discussing "I wonder where Nick is sailing today"?
Just had fun with one of these as you know Nick on a Bavaria 46 so great you did this….we got it working well in the end….furling in always worked best on the mast even though you can furl in on the endless rope… we found where the endless rope was spliced it kept jamming in the mast rig
Great teaching, I love the drone shots while seeing the action in the cockpit. ❤
Looks testing, we have been sailing in Croatia for last 2 weeks which day was this?
Who in right mind would purchase a yacht with this system, its rubbish and hard work, its like a sail but it isnt, i could've launched my my loose footed main sail and reefed it twice by the time you'd finished pissing about.
Hahahaha. Seriously doubt it. I’d take that challenge any day. I’m doing it slow and step by step to show the process. I can launch this sail in control solo in less than 30 seconds. Be fun to watch you though 😉
@@45DegreesSailing Great video, thanks!🙏 Could you please make a video when you do this solo? Would be super!
🤙
Would you have some procedure/hints , what to follow if this hits you on full sails?
Pull sails down. If you're that foolish to be under full sails with a black horizon.
There are only a few really helpful videos that demonstrate how docking can be made correctly, showing how to manage the moorings and the stern lines. Also the 0 8 00 technique is so cool and seems to be way easier to handle than the convetional one. I wish there was more videos like this to get into with the docking manuever. Thanx
You won't find a clearer description of ratchet vs. free. In fact, it's difficult to find any description. Even Selden's own video doesn't get into it.
Are you doing every morning and dawn ? 2:30
What do you mean? Do we put the tender on board every night?
